Pug Standard

General Appearance

The General appearance of the pug is described as being ‘multum in parvo’ (a lot in a little) shown in compactness of form, well knit proportions and hardness of muscle.

Characteristics
Charming and delightful, and full of dignity and intelligence.

Temperament
Even-tempered, happy and lively disposition.

Head and Skull
Head large, round, not apple-headed. Muzzle short, blunt, square, not upfaced. Wrinkles clearly defined with a diamond or thumb print.

Eyes
Dark, very large, globular in shape, soft and solicitous in expression, very lustrous, and when excited full of fire and life.

Ears
Small and soft like black velvet. There are two kinds – ‘Rose ear’ – small drop-ear which folds over.  ‘Button ear’ – ear flap folding forward, tip lying close to skull to cover opening of ear cannel. Preference given to latter.

Mouth
Slightly undershot. Wry mouth, teeth or tongue showing are highly undesirable. Wide lower jaw with incisors almost in a straight line.

Neck
Slightly arched to resemble a crest, strong and thick with enough length to carry head proudly.

Forequarters
Legs are strong, straight, of moderate length, and well under body. Shoulders well sloped.

Body
Short and cobby, wide in chest and well ribbed. The topline is level neither roached nor dipping.

Hindquarters
Legs are very strong, of moderate length, with good turn of stifle, well under body, straight and parallel when viewed from rear.

Tail
(Twist) High-set, curled as tightly as possible over hip. Double curl highly desirable.

Gait/Movement
Viewed from in front the pug should rise and fall  legs well under shoulder, keeping the feet directly in front, not turning in or out. From behind action just as true. Using the forelegs strongly putting them well forward with hind legs moving freely and using stifles well. A slight roll of hindquarters typifies gait.

 Coat
Fine, smooth, soft, short and glossy, neither harsh nor woolly.

  Colour
Fawn, apricot or black. Each clearly defined, to make the contrast complete between colour, trace (black line extending from occiput to twist) and mask. Markings clearly defined. Muzzle or mask, ears, moles on cheeks, thumb mark or diamond on forehead and trace as black as possible. Note: Any colour other then the colors mentioned are considered to be a fault.

At kaijen we treat our pugs and pets as if they are members of our family and we'd have it no other way, our dogs all live underfoot and are our constant companions. -Jen Hillairet

Always remember to do your research when planning on adding any new fur-coated friend to the family, with the adoption comes a life time commitment to that animal to do right by it and to treat it with the up-most respect and love it deserves.

As a breeder I put my heart and soul into every life I bring into this world and just like my human kids I want nothing but the best for them,  it's the least I can do.   All potential future fur-baby parents will be interveiwed by myself either by phone or afternoon coffee in my home so you can get to know my dogs and see how they live.

There are a lot of things you should be careful about when looking for a pug or a puppy.

First off A REPUTABLE breeder only breeds for themselves for the betterment of the breed within their blood lines and for future show prospects aiming for quality puppies not quantity.

NO REPUTABLE breeder will sell via local paper or websites like craigslist.

A REPUTABLE breeder will invite you into their home to see the pup's and pugs of their house hold.

A REPUTABLE breeder will place all pet quality puppies on a spay/neuter contract no exceptions.

A REPUTABLE breeder offers a life time of support along with the puppy you purchase and will ALWAYS take the puppy back if for some reason you can't keep it anymore, this applies even if that puppy is the ripe old age of 15 years old! No puppy or dog EVER deserves to be dumped in a shelter or rescue!

NEVER hold back on any questions you may have!  You can never know too much!

Important question to keep in mind and ask...
Does the breeder offer a written contract with a health guarentee?

Another series of questions to ask yourself:

Is the premises clean?

Are all the dogs clean?

  Are all the dogs happy?

Are all the dogs healthy?

Will the breeder supply references and not just past puppy buyers?

These few questions could save you thousands of dollars and irriversable heartache in the long run.
